It is 6 a.m. in one of Mumbai's crowded slums. The city is waking up, trains are rumbling past, and in a small tin-roof room, a ten-year-old girl is getting ready for school. Let's call her Pooja. She folds her uniform carefully, packs her two notebooks, and ties her hair the way her mother taught her.
What Pooja doesn't pack is breakfast. There isn't any.
Her father leaves before sunrise to look for daily-wage work at the construction sites. Her mother cleans homes across three buildings. On good days, there is dal and rice at night. On bad days, there is only tea. Pooja has learned not to ask.
By 11 a.m., sitting in her classroom, the words on the blackboard start to blur. Her teacher asks a question she knows the answer to, but her head feels heavy and her stomach hurts. She stays quiet. Slowly, the girl who once dreamed of becoming a teacher herself begins to believe that school is not for children like her.
Pooja's story is not rare. It is the story of thousands of children across Mumbai's slums.
We often think children drop out because they don't want to study. The truth is much simpler and much harder. A hungry child cannot concentrate. A hungry child cannot remember lessons. And when a family is struggling to eat, sending a child to earn a few rupees often feels more urgent than sending them to school.
Hunger quietly steals education. And without education, the cycle of poverty continues into the next generation.
Riddhi Siddhi Charitable Trust believes that no child in Mumbai should have to choose between food and learning. So we decided to remove that choice altogether.
We provide nutritious, freshly cooked meals to slum children and their parents across Mumbai. Why the parents too? Because when the whole family is fed, the pressure on children to skip school and work disappears. Parents can focus on earning a living, and children can focus on what matters most: their education.
Every meal we serve carries a simple message to the child receiving it: You matter. Your future matters. Now go and learn.
When children eat well, something beautiful happens. They arrive at school on time. They stay through the full day. They raise their hands in class. They laugh more, fall sick less, and start talking about the future again.
Imagine Pooja a few months after meals began reaching her family. She now eats a warm breakfast before school. She finished her last exam among the top students in her class. And when someone asks her what she wants to be, she doesn't hesitate anymore: "A teacher. So I can help kids like me."
That is the power of a single plate of food.
Right now, we are feeding [NUMBER] children and families every day. But for every child we reach, there are many more still sitting in classrooms with empty stomachs, or not in classrooms at all.
The need is growing, and we cannot do it alone. Rising food costs, cooking fuel, transport and volunteers all take resources. Your support is what keeps the kitchen running and the plates full.
Whatever you can give, big or small, puts a nutritious meal in front of a child, keeps whole families fed so children can stay in school, and helps cover cooking, fuel and delivery.
Every rupee goes toward food, cooking and delivery to the children and families who need it most.
You may never meet the child you help. But somewhere in Mumbai, a little boy will solve his first maths problem without a growling stomach. A little girl will read her first full page aloud. A mother will watch her child walk to school, knowing there will be food when they return.
That will be because of you.
